Pubic Health offers advice
Cannabis use among older adults is becoming a growing concern, especially with stronger products now available. Dr. Linna Li, Deputy Medical Officer of Health for the South East Health Unit, and Mandy Fleming, Health Promoter, discussed the risks and benefits for seniors.
Dr. Li highlighted that cannabis potency has significantly increased since legalization, making it important for seniors to be aware of its effects. She added that seniors, particularly those with existing health conditions or on medications, may be more vulnerable to cannabis’s impact.
While cannabis can provide relief for chronic pain and anxiety, it also poses risks like falls, increased heart rate, and potential addiction. Fleming advised seniors to consult their primary care provider to fully understand the potential risks.
