Growing Up on the Farm, a look into local agriculture, presented by Cowan’s Dairy, also fueled by KUBOTA. Today, we are profiling Locus Lane Farms in Brockville, Ontario.
Scott Connell and his family have owned Locus Lane Farms since 1901. Located at 2901 County Road 15, the full-time dairy farm milks around 110 cows twice a day while also feeding and caring for the herd.
Connell said the farm's name dates back to when his great-grandfather purchased the property and planted locust trees along the laneway. The name has remained ever since.
A typical day begins early in the morning with milking and feeding the cows and ends the same way later at night.
Connell said weather is one of the biggest challenges facing the farm. He explained cows are most comfortable in temperatures around 10 degrees, making the recent heat waves difficult on the herd. To help keep the animals cool, the barn is equipped with tunnel ventilation and fans.
According to Connell, farming is a lifestyle and isn't for everyone, but he said he loves it every day.
