Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after a person was fatally shot during a police operation in Brockville Thursday night.
The Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate following an incident involving members of the Ontario Provincial Police and Brockville Police Service on Aug. 6.
According to the OPP, officers with the East Region Tactics and Rescue Unit were assisting Brockville police with the execution of a search warrant at a residence in the city.
The operation was underway at approximately 8 p.m. when an interaction occurred and police discharged a firearm.
One person was taken to hospital following the shooting, where they were later pronounced dead.
Police have not released the identity of the deceased or provided additional information about what led to the shooting.
The OPP notified the Special Investigations Unit following the incident, and the provincial agency has now taken over the investigation.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates incidents involving police officers that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault allegations or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
Because the SIU has invoked its mandate, the OPP says it cannot provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Additional information is expected to come from the SIU as its investigation into the fatal Brockville shooting continues.
