Cataraqui Conservation has issued a Flood Outlook Statement warning residents of higher-than-normal water levels and potential flooding in inland lakes and streams. A period of warm weather starting Friday, March 6, combined with melting snow and forecasted rainfall, may increase water flows in smaller and larger watercourses over the coming days.
Rainfall forecasts include 2 to 11 mm on March 5-6 and 4 to 38 mm on March 7, with additional rain possible March 10-11. Snowpacks contain twice the normal water equivalent, increasing runoff risk. Water managers are raising lake discharges to reduce impacts, but flooding cannot be fully prevented.
Widespread flooding is not expected, but low-lying areas, creek crossings, and roadways may experience localized inundation. Ice cover on lakes and streams will weaken rapidly, increasing risk of ice jams. Residents are urged to stay away from dams, fast-flowing water, and unstable ice.
