Brockville police say a loud bang heard around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday was the result of a controlled detonation carried out by military specialists.

Earlier in the day, police received a report about a piece of military ordnance found at a construction site near Old Red Road. As a precaution, members of Canadian Forces Base Trenton were called to the scene.

Police said trained personnel examined the item and safely conducted a controlled explosion in the area during the evening hours. The detonation was planned and monitored, and there was no risk to public safety.

Residents in nearby areas may have heard or felt the blast, which was expected as part of the operation. No injuries or damage were reported.

Police thanked members of the public who contacted authorities to report the discovery.

The public is reminded that suspicious or unfamiliar objects should not be touched, and police should be contacted so items can be examined.
