High-speed Highway 401 incident ends with stolen vehicle arrest in Brockville

Police determined the vehicle had been reported stolen earlier that day in London

A high-speed incident on Highway 401 led to the recovery of a stolen vehicle and the arrest of an Oshawa man in Brockville, police say.

Leeds County Ontario Provincial Police were conducting traffic enforcement on the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 29, when an officer spotted a vehicle travelling well over the speed limit. The vehicle was also being driven aggressively in traffic.

Because of public safety concerns, officers did not attempt an immediate traffic stop and instead followed the vehicle while requesting assistance. The vehicle exited the highway at Stewart Boulevard in Brockville, where officers again attempted to stop it. The driver refused to stop and police did not pursue.

The vehicle later collided with two parked vehicles and a fountain on Courthouse Boulevard. The driver fled on foot but was arrested without incident by OPP and Brockville Police.

Police determined the vehicle had been reported stolen earlier that day in London. A 41-year-old Oshawa man faces multiple charges and was held for a bail hearing.
