Heavy equipment lined up this week at the deconsecrated Christ Church Anglican in Lord’s Mills suggests demolition of the historic building is imminent in Augusta Township.

The stone church, closed for several years, sits within the community cemetery and is known for its belfry and Gothic-style windows. For generations, the structure has served as a visual anchor in the small rural settlement.

Christ Church was built on donated land in the community named after Charles Lord, who established mills in the area in the early 1800s. A distinctive feature at the front of the church is an 1822 millstone, discovered by William Ashby, a member of a neighbouring family, and incorporated into the site.

A nearby resident said many former parishioners and local residents may not be aware the church is about to be taken down.

Christ Church in Lord’s Mills is no longer active and falls under a shared Anglican ministry that also includes St. James Anglican in Maitland and St. John’s Anglican in Lyn.
