A possible ice storm followed by strong winds is expected to create dangerous conditions across the Brockville, Prescott and surrounding areas beginning this evening and lasting into Monday.
Environment Canada says freezing rain is forecast to start tonight and continue into Monday morning, with ice build-up of 15 to 20 millimetres possible on roads, sidewalks, trees and power lines. Temperatures may briefly rise above freezing late Monday morning, allowing freezing rain to change to rain before colder air returns.
Officials warn roads and walkways will likely become icy and slippery, making travel hazardous. Some routes could become impassable, and there may be major impacts on the Monday morning commute. Prolonged power outages are also considered likely, especially in areas with heavy ice accumulation.
Non-essential travel is being discouraged as conditions are expected to worsen.
Adding to the concern, strong winds are forecast to develop near midday Monday as a cold front moves through the region. Wind gusts could reach up to 70 kilometres per hour before easing Monday night. Areas already weakened by ice buildup will be most vulnerable to falling trees and power lines.
Residents are urged to monitor weather alerts and prepare for rapidly changing conditions.
