The City of Brockville says a province-wide road salt shortage is forcing changes to winter maintenance as supplies run low across Ontario. Municipalities have been hit by heavier winter weather, frequent freeze-thaw cycles, and transportation limits, leaving no new salt deliveries for the rest of the season.
City staff stockpiled early, but supplies are now tight. Brockville has about 200 tonnes of salt left, plus 400 tonnes of a salt and sand mix. A typical storm uses about 50 tonnes of salt in a day.
To stretch supplies, crews have stopped using straight salt and are applying a salt and sand mix instead. Colder temperatures mean residents should expect snow-packed roads and sidewalks, with bare pavement taking longer, especially during back-to-back storms.
The city says crews will continue regular winter operations. Residents are urged to drive and walk carefully, keep bins off roads, avoid pushing snow onto streets, clear hydrants and follow winter parking rules.
