Scam warning issued after fake ServiceOntario texts target residents

Police say at least one person has already been victimized and are urging the public to remain cautious and report suspicious messages

Brockville Police Service is warning residents about a surge in fraudulent text messages posing as ServiceOntario.

Police say multiple reports were received in one day involving messages that claim recipients owe outstanding fees. The texts warn that a driver’s licence will not be renewed unless immediate payment is made and include a link.

Authorities say the link leads to a fake website designed to collect personal and banking information.

Police stress that ServiceOntario does not send text messages requesting payment or financial details.

Residents are advised not to click any links, share personal information, or respond to the messages. Instead, they should delete the text, block the sender, and monitor financial accounts for unusual activity.

Police say at least one person has already been victimized and are urging the public to remain cautious and report suspicious messages.
