Warming centre sparks concern as counties promise better location soon

The counties say finding a suitable location is complex, but concrete steps are being taken to improve the situation

The United Counties of Leeds and Grenville say they are working to find a new location for a temporary warming centre in Brockville after hearing concerns from residents.

The warming centre opened at 55 Reynolds Drive to ensure people experiencing homelessness are not left outside during extreme cold. County officials say protecting life and safety remains the top priority.

Warden Corinna Smith-Gatcke said the decision was made quickly because of urgent winter conditions. She acknowledged the location has raised concerns in the community and said the current setup is not ideal.

Smith-Gatcke said staff are actively searching for a better long-term site that meets the needs of both clients and nearby residents. She thanked the community for its patience and understanding.

The counties say finding a suitable location is complex, but concrete steps are being taken to improve the situation. Officials say details about a new site will be shared with the public as soon as they are confirmed.

County leaders also expressed appreciation for community members and frontline workers supporting those in need during the coldest months.
