Beloved Augusta firefighter remembered after never missing a call in 37 years

A celebration of life is planned for May 30 at the North Augusta Fire Hall on Mill Street

Augusta Township is mourning the loss of longtime volunteer firefighter Bill Vander Velde, who died May 14 at Sherwood Park Manor at age 80.

Augusta Fire Rescue announced the death of its honourary member in a social media post, calling him a dedicated firefighter who served the community for more than 37 years.

According to his obituary, Vander Velde joined the North Augusta Fire Department in 1971 and served until 2008. The obituary said he never missed a call during his years with the department.

Vander Velde also worked at the North Augusta Lumber Yard, Coons Lumber and the United Counties of Leeds Grenville at Greenbush.

He was the husband of the late Sharon “Momma D” Dillabough and father of Gord VanderVelde.

A celebration of life is planned for May 30 at the North Augusta Fire Hall on Mill Street. Donations are being directed to the Ontario SPCA Leeds and Grenville Animal Centre in Augusta.
