Brockville resident Hugh Gardiner says the removal of the city’s community flagpoles marks a sad day and follows a dispute over a request to fly the Palestinian flag.
Gardiner says the flagpoles near the Brockville Tunnel were removed as part of changes to the city’s Community Flag Raisings and Flag Protocol Policy.
The Brockville Peace Collective had requested permission to fly the Palestinian flag at Tunnel Bay from Nov. 27 to Dec. 1, 2025, to recognize Palestine’s Independence Day.
Gardiner argues the policy changes were made in response to that request and says the decision unfairly affects people of Palestinian heritage.
He noted the former policy allowed special flag raisings to recognize national and independence days, multicultural events, fundraising drives and historical commemorations.
Gardiner says similar flag raisings had been held for Chinese, Indian, Ukrainian and other communities.
He says removing the flagpoles ends a long-standing Brockville tradition of recognizing community heritage and contributions.
