Brockville honours veterans with new memorial banners filling the downtown core

Officials from Legion Branch 96 say the project is an important part of the city’s Remembrance Day preparations and helps keep the memory of veterans alive for younger generations

Brockville’s downtown streets are lined with new Veterans Memorial Banners, part of an annual project led by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 96 to honour local veterans and their sacrifices ahead of Remembrance Day.

The project, created by volunteer Wayne McIsaac, continues to grow each year. McIsaac said he designed the banners to be as affordable as possible so that everyone in the community could participate in recognizing local heroes.

The idea began during the pandemic, when McIsaac and a few others first installed the banners, sparking immediate community interest.

He emphasized how the project has grown over the years.

He said that they now have them up for around a month long.

With streets now filled, McIsaac is looking for more space next year as the display expands.

He also spoke about the impact he hopes the banners will have on the community.

McIsaac encourages everyone to take a walk through Brockville’s downtown to see the banners that so many community members worked hard to create.

The banners now hang proudly along city streets, serving as a visual reminder of those who have served and continue to serve in Canada’s Armed Forces.
