Coun. Rob Smith will lose 30 days’ pay after an integrity commissioner found he breached Elizabethtown-Kitley’s code of conduct.
Council accepted the recommended penalty during a special meeting last Thursday (Aug. 20).
Integrity Commissioner Tony Fleming found Smith breached the code by telling staff and members of the public that he intended to fire three senior employees if elected mayor. He also found Smith disparaged the employees’ professional reputations.
Smith, who is running for mayor against fellow Coun. Henry Oosterhof, was absent from the meeting.
Coun. Eleanor Renaud argued the recommended penalty was not strong enough, while Coun. Dan Downey urged council to follow Fleming’s recommendation.
Fleming said the Municipal Act allows for a maximum 90-day suspension of pay. He recommended 30 days because it was the first time he had recommended a financial penalty involving Smith.
Council approved the 30-day suspension.
