With February winter weather continuing to grip the region, a provincial salt shortage is leaving roads in the city more dangerous and less cleared than usual.
The City of Brockville says it is using a mix of salt and sand on streets due to limited supplies.
While the mixture helps improve traction, officials say it is not as effective as straight salt, especially during steady snowfall and freezing temperatures.
Fire Chief Melanie Jones is urging residents to adjust their driving as snow, ice and cold temperatures continue to create hazardous conditions. She is advising drivers to prepare before heading out.
Jones says bringing a fully charged cell phone is another important way to stay safe during winter driving.
She adds that every driver should keep a survival emergency kit in their vehicle.
