Free basketball lessons are offered Wednesday mornings this summer
A new multi-sport recreation pad officially opened in Spencerville on Thursday evening, giving local kids a new place to play.
The asphalt pad, located next to the Spencerville Arena, is large enough for several activities at once. It includes two basketball hoops and lights for evening use.
The project was led by the Spencerville and District Optimist Club, with community fundraising efforts starting five years ago.
“All the hard work has paid off,” said club president Julia Couture.
The pad was laid last fall and served as a base for a winter rink.
The land was provided by the Spencerville Agricultural Society, which praised the project’s impact on local families.
Officials, including MP Michael Barrett and Deputy Mayor Stephen Dillabough, joined a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Future plans include ball hockey and pickleball courts.
