Ontario says it has repurposed 159 surplus properties since 2018
More than 7,600 acres of government land in Edwardsburgh/Cardinal is set to be transferred to the township under a new agreement announced today.
The transfer follows 2,500 acres transferred by the province in April. Together, the land will make more than 10,000 acres available for agriculture, housing, economic development and conservation.
Todd McCarthy, Ontario’s acting infrastructure minister, said the transfer will go a long way.
Edwardsburgh/Cardinal Mayor Tory Deschamps explained how the land will be divided up.
He said the township's first priority is to make the agricultural land available for farming again, with some of it currently being used and some sitting unused.
The land transfer has been in the works for years, dating back before Deschamps and his council took office about four years ago.
MPP Steve Clark said the agreement will create economic opportunities for generations.
The province says the transfers could generate up to $187 million in economic value over 10 years and create up to 600 jobs.
