Police are reminding drivers that everyone has a role to play in preventing serious collisions and keeping Ontario's roads and waterways safe
The Ontario Provincial Police laid more than 8,200 charges over the Civic Holiday long weekend as officers increased enforcement on roads, trails and waterways across the province.
The OPP says officers issued approximately 8,240 traffic and marine safety charges during the holiday enforcement campaign aimed at improving public safety.
Speeding accounted for the largest number of offences, with 3,921 charges laid.
Police also issued 579 seatbelt-related charges, 77 distracted driving charges, 188 impaired driving charges, and 128 charges for failing to comply with Ontario's Move Over Law.
The OPP says increased traffic during the long weekend makes safe driving especially important and is thanking motorists and passengers who made responsible choices over the holiday.
