The OPP says patience, courtesy and attention from everyone can help prevent serious collisions
A metre of space could help prevent a serious collision on Ontario roads.
The Ontario Provincial Police is reminding drivers to leave at least one metre when passing cyclists and to wait until it is safe to go around. Drivers should also check their blind spots before turning or opening a vehicle door, and watch for cyclists near intersections and driveways.
Cyclists also have a role in road safety. Under Ontario law, bicycles are considered vehicles, meaning riders must obey traffic signs and signals and travel in the same direction as traffic.
The OPP also encourages cyclists to use lights and reflectors at night, signal turns and lane changes, and avoid distractions such as cellphones or headphones.
Helmets are required by law for cyclists under 18 and are recommended for all riders.
The OPP says patience, courtesy and attention from everyone can help prevent serious collisions.
