Police are reminding people to drive sober, stay focused, slow down and use proper safety equipment throughout the holiday weekend
Ontario Provincial Police are urging people to make safe choices on roads, trails and waterways during the Thanksgiving long weekend.
The OPP is taking part in Operation Impact, a national traffic safety campaign focused on behaviours that can lead to serious collisions.
Police say Thanksgiving weekends have had the second-highest number of road fatalities among Ontario long weekends over the past decade. Last year, 13 people died in collisions in OPP jurisdictions.
Alcohol and drug use have been the leading factors in fatalities over the past 10 years, while failing to use safety equipment, including seatbelts, helmets and lifejackets, has also contributed to deaths.
OPP officers will patrol across Ontario and focus on impaired and fatigued driving, aggressive and distracted driving, and seatbelt and child car seat use.
Officers will also patrol trails and waterways.
Police are reminding people to drive sober, stay focused, slow down and use proper safety equipment throughout the holiday weekend.
