Anyone who suspects fraud should contact local police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre
The OPP is warning residents across Eastern Ontario about fraudsters using increasingly sophisticated tactics to steal personal information, money and valuable property.
Police are highlighting two scams that are currently targeting residents.
In one scheme, fraudsters pose as cellphone service providers and offer discounts, upgraded plans or new devices. Victims may be asked to log into their legitimate cellphone account and provide passwords, security codes or personal identification.
A victim may then receive a new phone and be told to ship it to an address provided by the fraudster. The victim can be left responsible for the cost of the device and other losses.
The OPP is also warning people selling heavy equipment, trailers, vehicles and recreational equipment online.
Fraudsters may agree to buy an item without seeing it and arrange for a tow truck or another third party to collect it. Sellers may receive a counterfeit cheque, money order or bank draft, only to discover the payment is fraudulent after their property has been taken.
Police advise residents to be wary of unsolicited offers, pressure to act quickly and requests for passwords, PINs or security codes.
