Shrove Tuesday is being marked today as the final day before Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent, a six-week period of reflection leading up to Easter.
Traditionally, Shrove Tuesday is a time to use up rich foods that are often given up during Lent. Ingredients such as eggs and sugar would not last through the fasting period, making pancakes a popular and practical choice.
Mike Reid, pastor at St. Lawrence Anglican Church, said the day is known by many different names and is celebrated around the world.
St. Lawrence Anglican Church is hosting a Shrove Tuesday pancake supper tonight. The Ways and Means group will serve traditional pancakes and sausages for $8 at the Canon Torraville Hall.
