Bacteria alert
Several popular beaches across Eastern Ontario have been deemed unsafe for swimming this week due to high levels of bacteria in the water.
According to the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit, recent testing shows Riverside, Centennial, Lanark Beach, Almonte Beach and Kelly’s Beach are all posted as unsafe for bathing.
Officials warn that swimming in water with elevated bacteria levels can pose health risks, including skin, ear, and eye infections, or more serious illness if water is swallowed.
The health unit conducts weekly testing throughout the summer to monitor water quality and ensure public safety.
Conditions like heavy rainfall, wildlife, and high temperatures can all affect bacteria levels in the water.
Swimmers are advised to check local beach postings before heading out.
