Grenville County OPP contacted the U.S. Secret Service, which helped disrupt the fraud
Ontario Provincial Police say a resident of Oxford Mills fell victim to a tech service fraud reported on February 19. The victim received a phone call from someone claiming to be a Bell Canada representative, offering to upgrade their router after the recent installation of fibre-optic lines.
The caller instructed the resident to download software to her device. She was then told a virus had been found, prompting further steps. The fraudster manipulated the victim’s online banking and repeatedly directed her to visit her financial institution. Wire transfers of “overpayments” were made to a U.S. financial institution, resulting in significant financial loss.
Grenville County OPP contacted the U.S. Secret Service, which helped disrupt the fraud. The victim’s bank is working to recover portions of the stolen funds. Police warn residents never to allow unknown callers to access their computers or devices.
