Drivers across our listening area are being reminded to slow down and watch carefully as school buses return to area roads.
OPP says some schools begin classes today, meaning motorists can expect more buses, pedestrians and cyclists during their daily commutes.
Drivers approaching a stopped school bus with its safety lights and equipment activated must stop before reaching the bus. They cannot proceed until the bus moves or the safety equipment has been turned off.
The rule applies to drivers travelling in both directions, including on multi-lane roads. The exception is on roads divided by a median, where traffic travelling in the opposite direction does not have to stop.
The OPP says vehicle owners can also be charged if their vehicle illegally passes a stopped school bus, even if they were not behind the wheel.
A first offence can bring a fine of $400 to $2,000 and six demerit points. Subsequent offences carry fines of up to $4,000, six demerit points and possible jail time.
