Students must understand their fire safety plan in case of an emergency
As many students move to college or university soon, some will be living away from home for the first time.
Brockville Fire Chief Melanie Jones is urging students to keep fire safety top of mind, saying anything can happen and preparation is key.
Jones said it is vital for students to have a designated escape route.
She also recommends using power bars instead of a mess of extension cords and warns against running extension cords under carpets.
Jones discussed important fire safety tips for students living in shared or student houses.
For space heaters, Jones says they should be kept at least one metre away from anything that can burn. They should also be turned off when left unattended.
Jones said students should pay attention to their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
She said students must understand their fire safety plan in case of an emergency.
