Owners are encouraged to speak with their veterinarian and take steps to keep pets safe this summer
The Ontario SPCA Leeds and Grenville is warning pet owners about four bugs that can affect pets during the summer months.
Katelyn Stojadinov highlighted those four bugs to be wary of.
She talked about why the organization reminds pet owners about these bugs annually.
She said checking pets thoroughly after being outdoors is key.
She also said simple ways to check pets include using a microfibre cloth or a lint roller.
Mosquitoes can spread heartworm, while ticks can carry diseases such as Lyme disease. Fleas may cause irritation and other health issues for pets if left untreated.
Veterinarians can also provide preventative medications, including tick and flea treatments and repellents for flies and mosquitoes.
Owners are encouraged to speak with their veterinarian and take steps to keep pets safe this summer.
