Sunchild Deer-Okpik is the accused
The Brockville Concert Association has cancelled the upcoming Twin Flames concert scheduled for Saturday, June 21 at Wall Street United Church. The decision comes after a CBC Ottawa report revealed that singer Sunchild Deer-Okpik, also known as Jaaji Okpik, faces multiple historical sexual offence charges.
The concert was set to take place on National Indigenous Peoples Day. In a public statement, the association expressed deep disappointment and apologized to fans for the last-minute cancellation. They also noted the strong local support for Twin Flames and said refunds are already being processed by the Brockville Arts Centre.
Vice-president Laurel Greene confirmed the decision to cancel was made to respect the seriousness of the charges, which include sexual assault, sexual touching of a young person while in a position of authority, and forcible confinement. Okpik denies the allegations.
The volunteer-run group hopes to reschedule a replacement concert later in the year.
