The para sport focus will continue throughout the 2026-27 school year
Brockville-area students are getting a close-up look at para sport after taking part in wheelchair basketball activities at school.
Students from across the Upper Canada District School Board are travelling to Ottawa this month to watch the IWBF 2026 Wheelchair Basketball World Championships, which run from Sept. 9 to 19.
The visits follow interactive wheelchair basketball sessions held at UCDSB schools since 2024 through the IWBF Ottawa 2026 Schools Program.
Students learn the basics of the sport, watch demonstrations and take part in games. They also learn that wheelchair basketball can include athletes with and without disabilities.
Students from Centennial ’67 Public School and Swift Waters Elementary School recently attended games. They said watching the athletes compete and recover from falls was inspiring.
UCDSB Health and Physical Education Learning Partner Lisa Winters said the program supports the board’s All-In Sport Initiative by showing students that sport can be inclusive and accessible.
The para sport focus will continue throughout the 2026-27 school year.
