The driver was charged with stunt driving
A young driver was caught going 177 kilometres per hour on Highway 401 in Brockville on Sunday, according to the Ontario Provincial Police.
An officer from the OPP East Region’s Traffic Incident Management Enforcement (TIME) team stopped the vehicle in the eastbound lanes. The driver was charged with stunt driving, a serious offence under Ontario traffic laws.
Police say the driver’s license was suspended on the spot and the car was towed and impounded for 14 days. The driver will also have to appear in court.
Ironically, police say the traffic stop happened right beside a roadside memorial marking the location of a fatal collision.
The OPP is using this incident to remind all drivers to slow down and drive safely, especially on busy highways like the 401. Excessive speeding is one of the leading causes of serious crashes in Ontario.
"Please drive responsibly," police said in a statement. "Arrive alive — your life depends on it."
