Volunteer Appreciation Day: Mike Libbos

Libbos continues to dedicate his retirement to helping others, saying volunteer-driven organizations help keep the Brockville community connected and active

A retired Brockville husband and father is continuing to make a difference through years of volunteer service in his community.

Mike Libbos has spent about eight years volunteering with the Brockville 50+ Activity Centre, a volunteer-based, not-for-profit organization and registered charity. The centre is fully run by volunteers and offers affordable programs to help adults 50 and over stay mentally, physically and socially active.

Libbos first connected with the centre when he signed up for a Tai Chi class. Learning about the work involved behind the scenes inspired him to get involved. He has since served as a volunteer, board member, and director.

He is also the coordinator for Cycling Without Age – Brockville, another volunteer-run, not-for-profit group.

Libbos explained what encouraged him to begin volunteering.

He said he values Tai Chi and knows programs like it only exist in Brockville because volunteers give their time.

He talked about the impact volunteering can make.

One moment stands out. Libbos and fellow Tai Chi students honoured Super Volunteer Bob McDougall by performing a synchronized set outside his home during his celebration of life.

He said that all happened because of volunteerism.

Libbos continues to dedicate his retirement to helping others, saying volunteer-driven organizations help keep the Brockville community connected and active.
