For more than 25 years, Brockville’s Kevin Dionne, his family and friends have kayaked along the Rideau Canal to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society.
Kayaking for Cancer was started in honour of Dionne’s mother and father-in-law, who were both battling cancer. His mother received treatment at Kingston Health Sciences Centre, while his father-in-law was treated at the Ottawa Hospital.
The group left the Kingston Rowing Club last Saturday and is expected to arrive at the Chateau Laurier in Ottawa this Saturday.
Family spokesperson David Martyn says the group is often greeted by people along the route.
Last year, the fundraiser brought in $89,000. On Tuesday, it surpassed $1 million in total donations.
Martyn says the family also brings a bucket along the journey to collect donations.
The trip from Kingston to Ottawa on the Rideau Canal is over 200 kms.
