A referral is required for a sleep test
According to Stats Canada, 7-9 hours of sleep is recommended for adults 18-64, but that can be hard to accomplish due to symptoms of sleep apnea.
This is a disorder where sleep is interrupted by pauses in breathing, and the sleeper must wake up briefly to resume breathing. In most cases, the sleeper doesn't realize they are waking up.
This is a reality for our Harper Cotie who just returned from an overnight sleep study at the MedSleep Clinic in Napanee to find out what's going on while he's sleeping and to ultimately find out whether or not he has sleep apnea.
Dev, the Sleep Technologist who cared for Harper talks about why people come in for the sleep study.
Around 27 wires are put on the sleeper before the recording takes place to track movements and what's going on in the brain while sleeping.
Dev explained how Harper did during his first sleep study.
In 2024, Stats Canada reported around 858,900 adults are affected by sleep apnea.
Lastly, before anyone can go for a sleep study, a referral is required.
Harper, says he looks forward to a follow up appointment in September. To learn more, visit medsleep.com.
