Ontario recently invested $401,404 to support firefighter safety in Leeds and Grenville, giving local fire departments added resources through the province’s Fire Protection Grant.
The funding was distributed among departments across the region, according to Brockville Fire Chief Melanie Jones, who outlined how the money was allocated to address local needs.
The investment follows the provincial government’s decision to double the Fire Protection Grant program from $10 million to $20 million.
Last year, government representatives met with local fire chiefs and deputy chiefs, who identified stable funding as a top priority for municipal fire services across Ontario.
Jones also explained the purpose of the grant.
The funding comes as January is firefighter cancer awareness month, drawing attention to the health risks firefighters face in the line of duty.
The funding announcement was hosted by the Brockville Fire Department last month and attended by fire officials and municipal leaders.
Jones said the funding had been lobbied for over several years.
She thanked the provincial government for its support.
