Goodman says the goal is to connect as many people as possible with housing throughout the winter
People experiencing homelessness in Brockville will have access to indoor support services around the clock this winter as two programs expand on Sunday, November 1.
The United Counties of Leeds and Grenville is opening an overnight warming centre at 10 Church St., operated by Bartimaeus Inc. It will run daily from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. until March 31, offering a supervised space, refreshments and connections to housing support.
Fiona Goodman, the Counties’ manager of integrated program delivery, says the centre will primarily serve as a point of connection.
A new daytime program operated by Peer Support South East Ontario will open at 189 King St. W., running daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Services include peer support, laundry facilities, snacks and evening check-ins for those needing overnight shelter.
The program replaces the weekday drop-in at 25 Front Ave., operated by Lanark, Leeds and Grenville Addictions and Mental Health. Loaves and Fishes will continue serving low-cost meals at that location.
Goodman explains how staff will help people find permanent housing.
Goodman says fewer people visited the warming centre as winter progressed last year, with many moving into supportive housing through connections with intensive case managers.
She also talks about the number of people they expect to serve this winter.
The Leeds Grenville Hart Hub officially opens tomorrow (Oct. 30), and Goodman says the Counties are working with LLGAMH to coordinate access.
She says the goal is to connect as many people as possible with housing throughout the winter.
