Story by Tim Baltz
Plenty of action this past Saturday night at the Brockville Ontario Speedway with six big features on the card plus a Dutchmen Dash for the DIRTcar 358 Modified and DIRTcar Sportsman, along with an exciting season opener for the Street Stocks.
Speaking of the Street Stocks, they were first up on the night and veteran Stephane Philippe took the lead early on and had a great race car in the opening laps. Defending track champion Todd Raabe was strong early but spun while running second and bring out an early yellow. Raabe would rebound to finish 6th. As the laps wound down Philippe managed to pull away from a strong field and held off Charles Marchand in the closing laps to score the season opening event. Marchand held on for second with Mike Schonauer 3rd, Nick Gauvreau and Francis Gauthier were the top 5.
Greg Brinklow put on a great show for the fans in the opening laps of the DIRTcar Sportsman 25 lap event, as he led early and was looking for his first career win. Along the way Domonick Merkley and Shane Stearns were on the charge to the front with Merkley taking the lead on lap 10 but Stearns was on the charge as well as well as 4-time track champion Bobby Herrington. Stearns would move in front on lap 12 with Herrington and Gavin Eisele moved into the top 3, but Quebec invader Jacob Nadeau was on the move looking for his second win in just his second start of the year. Nadeau was flying around the top of the track and would pass Stearns for the lead with three to go. From there Nadeau would march on to the win over Stearns and Herrington. A special Dutchmen Dash took place right after between Bobby Herrington, Shane Stearns and Gavin Eisele. However on lap 1 a terrifying wreck occurred when Bobby Herrington’s right front broke sending Bobby’s car airborne and into a series of violent flips in turns 1 and 2. Despite the terrible flip, Bobby Herrington got out of the car uninjured. Stearns suffered front end damage which handed Eisele the Dash win.
Gabriel Cyr was the star of the show in the DIRTcar 358 Modifieds as he took the lead from fellow Cornwall native Gavin MacFarlane on lap 5 with Tristan Draper and Ryan Stabler moving into the top 3. These three drivers put on a great show running the outside lane on a demanding race track. As the laps clicked off Cyr held Draper’s favorite lane with Stabler trying to make a move as well but Gabriel Cyr remained up front and in control. Over the final laps Gabriel Cyr was able to navigate the speedway perfectly and it was his night as he scored another first, his first career DIRTcar 358 Modified win. Draper crossed second over Ryan Stabler, Kyle Dingwall and Kalen Draper. The 358 Modifieds held a special Dutchmen Dash on this night and it was a battle of Draper brothers with Kalen getting the best of Tristan on this night, in the 6 lap event. Kyle Dingwall was not able to answer the call for the Dash.
A special 15 lap DIRTcar Pro Stock feature was held on this night and Eric Jean Louis was looking to keep his early season momentum going after winning at Mohawk earlier in the year, as he grabbed the lead over Stephane Lebrun and Tyler Bushey. Jean Louis had a dominant race car and pulled away from a great battle for second between Bushey and Lebrun to record his second career win and first ever at Brockville. Tyler Bushey got but Stephane Lebrun for third at the checkers.
Josh Verne Jr. came into the night one point in front of Marc Surprenant in the battle for the track title and used his front row starting spot to grab the led over 2022 track champion Ryan Poole and two time track champion Lee Ladouceur. Verne had a dominant car and pulled away from the field using the bottom lane on the speedway. Ladouceur moved to second and was trying different lines to try and catch Verne for the top spot. The 20 lap event would go green to checkered and nobody was catching Josh Verne Jr. on this night as he dominated for his second win in a row at “The BOS”. Lee Ladouceur crossed in second over Bruno Richard, Ryan Poole and Kyle Wilson.
The night concluded with a 12 lap Novice Sportsman feature and Patrick Kudrinko was strong early on as he took the lead from early race leader Damien King and began to pull away. Kudrinko would survive several late cautions in the event to hold off Cory Lambert and Kyle Kudrinko, for his second straight win and third in his last four outings in the region and build on his points lead as well.
Next week it will be the first appearance of the Empire Super Sprints as they invade The BOS along with a full program in all divisions plus the return of the popular Mini Stock division. Racing starts at 7pm.
