Story by Tim Baltz
Racing action continued in a big way this past Saturday night at the Brockville Ontario Speedway and it was a very important night for the Surprenant Truck Shop Crate Sprints, plus a big show in all classes. The Street Stocks made their return and provided some exciting action.
The evening kicked off with the 15 lap Street Stock feature and Kyle Massey, who is still in search of his first career win, jumped out to a big lead over Charles Marchand and Francis Gauthier. Even with a quick yellow after the opening lap Massey was able to remain in front and was driving away, but Bruno Boivin was cutting through the field quickly, getting to second before the yellow flew for a slowed Jonathan Gallipeau on the back stretch on lap 6. Unfortunately, Kyle Massey’s day would end as well, as he broke under yellow in turn 4. This gave Boivin the lead, as he drove away with points leader Mike Schonauer and Brighton Speedway invader Brock Gregory close by. Over the final laps Gregory would make it close, but Bruno Boivin would hold on to secure his 1st win since September 11th of 2010 at Brockville. Gregory came home second ahead of Mike Schonauer, Tyler French and Francis Gauthier.
Up next was the Northern Crate Nationals qualifier for the Surprenant Truck Shop Crate Sprint Cars. The winner of this 25 lap event would get a guaranteed spot into the big event in September and Adam Turner was one driver looking for that spot, as he jumped into the lead over Lee Ladouceur and Andrew Hennessy. Turner was strong on this night using the bottom lane, while behind him some intense racing took place. A scary incident came on lap 4 as Ladouceur and Hennessy battled, Bruno Richard clipped a right rear tire sending his car sailing off turn 4 and rolling over into the tall grass. The race was red flagged, but thankfully Richard climbed out without injury. When racing resumed Turner again pulled away as Hennessy and Ladouceur continued their battle for second with Rick Wilson and Josh Verne Jr. giving chase. Turner had a fast car but on lap 20, would lose the front wing, which caused a yellow flag. When the green flew the missing wing actually helped Turner as he drove away from a quality field in the final laps for his first win of 2025 and a spot in the Northern Crate Nationals. Lee Ladouceur won the battle for second over Andrew Hennessy, Rick Wilson and Josh Verne Jr., who’s win streak came to an end at six in a row.
Lee Ladouceur and Gavin MacFarlane paced the field to the start of the 30 lap DIRTcar 358 Modified feature, with MacFarlane grabbing the lead quickly, but Ladouceur, gathering on that experience from the previous Sprint Car event, took the lead on lap 4 bringing Shane Stearns to the runner up spot. The top 5 drivers remained single file through much of the race as Ladouceur led, with Stearns, points leader Tristan Draper, Jarrett Herbison and Lucas Fuller right there with him. On lap 17 Stearns was finally able to get the run he wanted, taking the lead from Ladouceur on the inside lane off turn four, bringing Tristan Draper to second. A caution flew on lap 18 as Gavin MacFarlane slowed on the front stretch and saw a great run come to a disappointing end. On the restart Stearns led the way but Tristan Draper would use his favorite lane, the top side, to take over the lead and begin to pull away. Over the final 10 laps Tristan Draper put on a driving clinic as he would go unchallenged to score his second win of 2025 and extend his points lead. Stearns settled for a runner up finish, ahead of Jarrett Herbison, Lucas Fuller and last week’s winner Gabriel Cyr.
Sylvain Dupuis has been the talk of the town at Brockville over the last few weeks, leading laps and running up front. This past Saturday was no different as he drove away from the field once again with Fire Swamp and Jessica Power chasing him from second and third. The racing was intense throughout the 25 lap feature event, with many wondering if anyone could catch Dupuis. Fire Swamp had plans to do that and was chipping away at the lead deficit each lap. Behind the top two Jessica Power, birthday boy Blake Smith and Bobby Herrington were battling hard for third, with Herrington getting by both drivers on lap 18, as he set sail after the top two. The leaders entered traffic and Dupuis was having no issues, but that all changed on lap 19 as Fire Swamp used a lapped car as a pick, to take the lead. Once in front Fire Swamp drove consistent laps, hitting his marks and would go uncontested for his first win in the DIRTcar Sportsman division, after several wins in Novice Sportsman in 2020. Bobby Herrington would win the battle for second over Dupuis, Jessica Power and Xavier Andrews, who came from 9th to finish 5th.
The night was complete with a 12 lap Novice Sportsman event and Shaun Lafave was making one of his infrequent starts at The BOS, but was strong as he drove away in the opening laps, over last weeks winner Cory Lambert and points leader Kyle Kudrinko. Lafave appeared to have the race well in hand, however on lap 6 he would spin by himself, causing the first yellow of the race. This left Cory Lambert in front with opening day winner Tessa Riemersma second. These two drivers would battle it out over the remaining laps, but in the end Cory Lambert, would make his final Novice Sportsman start one to remember as he scored the win, his second in a row. Riemersma held on for a close second with Shaun Lafave charging to third over Damien King, Kyle Kudrinko and Cole Hanna.
This Wednesday the Super DIRTcar Series makes their first of two appearances in 2025 for the Canadian Classic. The race is part of the series three race swing through Canada, which begins at Autodrome Drummond on Monday and Tuesday. The night will also feature a 40 lap event for the Northeast Late Model Alliance with hot laps and time trials to kick off the night, before the green drops at 7pm.
