What's Good in Brockville? Swift Waters Elementary's Bike Bus gets students biking to school

This year's rides wrap up October 28, with plans to return in the spring when the weather improves

Students at Swift Waters Elementary School have been trading car rides for bike rides, with a teacher-led “Bike Bus” helping them get to school together.

The program launched in May and has continued through September and October, giving students in Grades 1 to 6 a chance to bike to and from school under teacher supervision.

Organizer Danielle Hache talks about where the idea came from.

Hache also describes the route students follow during the rides.

The trip takes about 20 minutes. Students in Grades 1 to 3 must arrange for an adult aged 18 or older to ride with them, while those in Grades 4 to 6 need a signed permission form returned to the school.

This year's rides wrap up October 28, with plans to return in the spring when the weather improves.

Organizers are also raising money for a more powerful, waterproof speaker for next season. Donations can be arranged by emailing emily.hawksby@ucdsb.on.ca.
