What's Good in Brockville? Veterans Memorial Banners are back downtown

As November 11 approaches, residents are encouraged to visit the downtown core, reflect on the sacrifices made for freedom and remember those who continue to serve the country today

Brockville’s downtown streets are lined with Veterans Memorial Banners, part of an annual project led by Royal Canadian Legion Branch 96 to honour local veterans and their sacrifices ahead of Remembrance Day.

The project, created by volunteer Wayne MacIsaac, continues to grow each year.

MacIsaac said he designed the banners to be as affordable as possible so everyone in the community could take part in recognizing local heroes.

The idea began during the pandemic, when MacIsaac and a few others first installed the banners, sparking immediate community interest. The initiative has grown from around 50 banners to about 330 this year.

MacIsaac said help from locals, including council candidates, made putting up the banners much easier this year.

The banners will remain up until the weekend after Remembrance Day, giving Brockville residents more than a month to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who served.

MacIsaac spoke about the impact he hopes the banners will have on the community.
