The goal of the fund is to support financial stability and cover unexpected police costs
Brockville city councillors want more time to review a proposed reserve fund for the local police force. The general committee postponed a decision after hearing from Police Chief Mark Noonan and Police Board Chair King Yee, Jr.
The reserve fund would collect surplus money from police budgets, mainly from third-party criminal record checks. In 2025, this revenue is expected to reach $1.5 million. However, city officials say this income can change due to market and legal factors.
The goal of the fund is to support financial stability and cover unexpected police costs, like major crimes or legal fees. Councillors want a guarantee that the fund would also be used to cover any police deficits.
Coun. Jane Fullarton said police should keep surpluses only if they also cover their shortfalls. The committee sent the proposal back to staff for review. A new draft bylaw will be discussed in August.
