Brockville’s motion will be shared with neighbouring municipalities
Brockville city council’s general committee has endorsed a motion opposing proposed Via Rail service cuts that could reduce train access for local residents.
The motion, introduced by Mayor Matt Wren, urges Via Rail Canada to maintain adequate passenger rail service for Brockville and surrounding communities, while exploring ways to improve routes and scheduling. The call mirrors a similar resolution passed earlier this month by Kingston city council.
Via Rail had planned a three-month pilot project featuring non-stop service between Montreal and Toronto. The proposal, since postponed, would have cancelled several stops along the corridor, including Brockville, and limited service to one train per day in each direction.
Brockville’s motion will be shared with neighbouring municipalities, as well as federal and provincial representatives, to build regional support for equitable and inclusive rail service. The motion will go to full council for a final vote next week.
