Could be complete in time for Tall Ships
Brockville council will vote next Tuesday on spending $89,040 for the final phase of the Sabre Jet Monument restoration.
The funds will cover the installation of a new concrete base, decorative benches, lighting, and electrical upgrades. More than half of the cost will be covered by the Sabre Jet committee’s fundraising efforts, with the remaining $40,184.30 to come from the city’s fiscal policy reserve.
The Golden Hawks Sabre Jet was donated to Brockville in 1968 to honor fallen Canadian air crews.
It has been a symbol of pride on the city’s waterfront, though it faced possible removal in 2017 due to deterioration. Thanks to the efforts of local volunteers, restoration work began, with the first phase completed in 2018.
With the community eager for the project’s completion, council is expected to approve the contracts and move forward with the final phase, aiming for completion after this June’s Tall Ships Festival.
