Brockville Mayor Matt Wren says the city’s Santa Claus Parade will move forward this year under new leadership after controversy with former organizers.
In a statement on social media, Wren criticized the former parade committee for sparking what he called “Facebook drama” during a week when city staff and agencies were focused on helping residents displaced by a major fire.
At the centre of the dispute was a standard $250 road closure fee, which Wren noted many nonprofits routinely pay. He denied claims that organizers faced thousands of dollars in city costs, pointing out that insurance had long been covered by the city and no such extra fees were charged last year.
Wren also cited reports of poor treatment of volunteers and city staff during last year’s event.
He confirmed the Rotary Club and community partners are now working with Brockville Tourism to deliver a smooth, family-friendly parade under stable leadership.
