The church's highest position
Rev. Kimberly Heath, pastor at Wall Street United Church in Brockville, has been elected the 45th moderator of the United Church of Canada.
She won on the third ballot during the church’s general council in Calgary, narrowly defeating Rev. Samuel V. Dansokho. Other candidates included Rev. Dr. John Pentland, Rev. Dr. Cheri DeNovo CM, and Rev. Sungmin Jung.
The moderator is the church’s highest position and is held for a three-year term. Heath explained the role is similar to an archbishop in the Anglican Church or the pope in the Roman Catholic Church.
Heath will resign from her role in Brockville. She plans to split her time between Toronto, travel across Canada, and her home in Brockville.
She described her leadership using the Narrows of the St. Lawrence River as a metaphor, comparing hidden shoals to life’s challenges. Heath hopes to guide the church through uncertain spiritual waters.
