The Brockville Fire Department is warning residents after a spike in carbon monoxide (CO) calls across Leeds and Grenville, many caused by unsafe use of portable generators during recent power outages.
Fire officials say several calls came from homes where generators were used indoors or too close to windows and doors. Carbon monoxide is an invisible, odourless gas that can be deadly within minutes.
To stay safe, always run generators outside, at least 20 feet away from any openings. Never use them inside garages, basements, or sheds. Store fuel properly in approved containers and let the generator cool before refueling.
Use heavy-duty, outdoor-rated extension cords and plug appliances directly into the generator when possible. Make sure carbon monoxide alarms are installed outside all sleeping areas and test them regularly.
