This is the 17th annual National Drowning Prevention Day
Today is National Drowning Prevention Day, and local officials are reminding everyone to stay safe on the water.
Matt Tyo, Chief of Fire Prevention at the Brockville Fire Department, says preparation is key when heading out.
He recommends checking the weather forecast, packing the right gear, and ensuring all boating or watercraft courses are completed before setting off.
Tyo also stresses that having a proper, working lifejacket on board is a must, not just an option.
For non-confident swimmers, he says taking lessons or visiting trusted safety websites can make a big difference.
Tyo suggested an app called “What3words” can be extremely helpful in a bad situation on the water.
Drowning can happen quickly and quietly, Tyo warns, which is why prevention is so important.
National Drowning Prevention Day is a time to learn, be aware, and put safety first before heading near the water.
