Don’t ignore the silent killer: Brockville fire chief urges CO safety this fall

Under the Ontario Fire Code, working CO alarms are required in all homes with fuel-burning appliances, fireplaces, or attached garages

Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week is just a couple of weeks away, running from November 1 to 7 in Ontario, and Melanie Jones, Fire Chief at the Brockville Fire Department, is urging residents to take precautions against the deadly gas.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless, and tasteless gas produced when fuels like natural gas, wood, propane, or gasoline do not burn completely.

It can build up in enclosed spaces and cause serious illness or death.

Jones explains why Carbon Monoxide Awareness is especially important in the fall and winter.

Under the Ontario Fire Code, working CO alarms are required in all homes with fuel-burning appliances, fireplaces, or attached garages.

Failure to comply can result in fines.

She said that the fire code has changed and highlighted the new requirements for Carbon Monoxide Alarms beginning January first.

She highlighted the importance of having functioning alarms and maintaining fuel-burning appliances annually through a certified technician.

Jones also explained some of the symptoms of CO exposure.

If a CO alarm sounds, residents should leave immediately and call 9-1-1.

Avoid running generators or vehicles inside garages, and never use BBQs indoors.
