Will stay open... for now
Plans to close the Kemptville and seven other Southeast Public Health satellite offices have been paused following objections from local leaders and strong community concern.
At its Nov. 26 meeting, the Southeast Health Board voted to have the Medical Officer of Health withdraw closure recommendations and provide an initial report in December.
North Grenville Mayor Nancy Peckford and Edwardsburgh-Cardinal Mayor Tory Deschamps led calls for the pause, citing the essential services provided by the Kemptville office, including vaccinations, disease prevention, speech therapy, and environmental health inspections.
“Mobile services cannot replace what will be lost,” Peckford said, noting the closure would affect families, seniors, and vulnerable residents. Deschamps added that meaningful consultation and understanding rural realities are vital for decisions of this scale.
The Southeast Health Board’s decision offers a temporary reprieve, with both mayors emphasizing ongoing engagement to ensure future public health service changes reflect regional needs.
