The impact of the by-election results is expected to continue to unfold in the weeks ahead
Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberals have secured a majority government after winning three by-elections held Monday. The votes were in two Toronto ridings and one in Quebec, lifting the Liberals to 174 seats in the House of Commons, while the Conservatives hold 140 seats.
The result follows several floor crossings over the past six months, including four Conservatives and one NDP MP joining the Liberals.
Local MP Michael Barrett says he and his party remain committed to keeping their promises.
He said these floor crossings have not changed his mindset or his priorities.
Barrett said he remains happy to work with other parties continuing as a conservative.
One of the Liberals’ first moves as a majority was to suspend the gas excise tax until Sept. 7, effective April 20.
The impact of the by-election results is expected to continue to unfold in the weeks ahead.
